Man faces jury trial in Cottage Grove assault case

A Woodbury man who allegedly punched another man at a Cottage Grove party, causing traumatic brain injuries, faces a jury trial next month for felony assault charges.

Andrew J. Hagen, 21, faces charges of first-degree assault and third-degree assault in connection with the alleged incident last November. A jury trial is set to begin Oct. 17 in Washington County District Court in Stillwater.

Hagen turned himself in Friday on a warrant related to the case. He was released from Washington County Jail after posting $4,000 bond.

According to the criminal complaint:

In the early morning hours of Nov. 20, 2010, Hagen was at a party at a home in the 8600 block of Jewel Avenue in Cottage Grove. A fight broke out on a back patio and Hagen allegedly punched another man once in the face with his right fist. The 24-year-old victim fell to the ground, hitting his head on concrete. Hagen fled on foot.

Police were called to the home shortly after 1 a.m. and found the victim on the ground. Numerous witnesses described the punch and the victim's fall to the concrete.

Police located Hagen nearby at Hillside Trail and Jewel Avenue. He had a bloody face and ripped sweatshirt. He told police he had been in a fight and had been accosted by several individuals afterward.

The victim was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul to be treated for injuries. The complaint says he sustained a skull fracture, a blood clot in his head and a traumatic brain injury. He underwent treatment for an intracranial hemorrhage and a bone fracture, and was sent to inpatient rehabilitation.

The victim was discharged in December, but prosecutors allege that he experienced a loss of taste and smell as a result of the assault and remains on anti-seizure medication.

Hagen's first-degree assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
