St. Paul Park man killed, another injuried in CapX2020 power line incident

A St. Paul Park man died and another man was injured Monday in rural Fairfax, Minn., while working on a CapX2020 power line, authorities at the Renville County Sheriff’s office said.

Brett D. Binman, 26, was killed after an apparent electrocution while he and another worker, Joshua M. Roberts, 24, of Osseo, Wis., were working on a transmission line in the northeast portion of Renville County.

According to Sheriff Scott Hable, the department received a 911 call at approximately 8:43 a.m. Monday on a report of two men that were electrocuted in the same incident.

Emergency crews from Fairfax and Redwood Falls responded and attempted to resuscitate both men before they were airlifted to trauma centers in the Twin Cities.

Binman died from his injuries and Roberts remains hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

“The CapX2020 utilities company extends our condolences to the family of the accident victim and the worker currently being treated,” Lori Buffington, CapX2020 project spokesperson, said Thursday.

Both men were working for Donovan Construction, of Ham Lake, on the CapX2020 Brookings County-Hampton project that is installing 250 miles of transmission lines in the southern and western part of Minnesota.

Hable said the Renville County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, adding that there has not been an incident of this nature during his time as sheriff.

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration are also investigating.

Representatives from Donovan Construction did not return calls for comment.
