Stone Mill's season will feature numerous comedies

CANNON FALLS -- Stone Mill Dinner Theater will present five comedies during its 2003 season. This year, the schedule includes Sunday matinee dessert performances as well as dinner-theater shows.

The opening production is a comedy, "Conjugal Rights," playing from Jan. 24 through March 9. Written by Roger Hall, the play puts the 21-year marriage of Barry and Gen Masefield under a microscope, with hilarious results.

An insightful look at the institution of marriage, it addresses the agonies and ecstasies of the middle-aged couple's union and also examines the ups and downs of kids and careers. Among the crises is her desire to have a career and more of an identity of her own.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., preceded by dinner at 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 2:30 p.m., preceded by dessert at 2 p.m. Admission is $28.50 for dinner shows, $18 for matinees. Group arrangements are available.

The rest of the season follows:

April 4-May 18 -- "Chicks," a play about a kindergarten teacher by Grace Mckeany. The play takes place in her classroom, and audience members are her class.

June 13-July 27 -- "21a," a one-man show by Kevin Kling. The actor plays all eight people who are on a Minneapolis bus.

Aug. 15-Sept. 28 -- "A Couple of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking," a zany comedy by John Ford Noonan. A suburban New York housewife is having a tough day.

Oct. 31-Dec. 21 -- "A Tuna Christmas," a sequel to "Greater Tuna" written by Ed Howard, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams. The annual Christmas lawn display contest proves highly competitive.

Stone Mill is a boutique dinner theater that serves gourmet meals to accompany the productions. Each meal has a thematic connection to the show being performed, according to Julie Bateson, one of the owners. Dessert is served during intermission.

The dinner theater, an intimate space with limited seating, is a part of the Stone Mill Complex which includes a coffeehouse and eatery and the Stone Mill Marketplace with nine retail shops. It's located in historic downtown Cannon Falls at 432 W. Mill St., just off the Cannon Falls bike trail.
