Oshkosh convenience store robbery suspect kills self before arrest

Authorities in Oshkosh might have found a man who robbed five convenience stores but they'll never know for sure, because he shot himself to death.

Bart Mitchell, 25, of Oshkosh refused to surrender when he was stopped near Omro Wednesday night.

He shot himself instead, and died later at a hospital.

Richard Wollangk, Oshkosh city manager, tipped off police when he saw a man in black clothes take cash from a convenience store register. He followed the person's car until authorities could take over the pursuit. They followed Mitchell to Omro.

Mitchell was stopped at an intersection when he refused an order to leave his car. After a few minutes, officials said he opened the door, put his feet on the ground, and then shot himself.

Officers did not fire any shots, and no one else was hurt.

The five robberies all took place in the last two weeks. They're still being investigated and police said Mitchell fit the description of the suspect.
