Cottage Grove police: Knife-wielding 17-year-old arrested after burglary spree

Police say a 17-year-old Cottage Grove male broke into a home armed with a knife, burglarized another home and tried to break into 100 vehicles during a three-day crime spree that ended with his arrest.

The teen was arrested Friday, April 5, after a reported burglary about 9 p.m. at a home in the 7800 block of Hemingway Avenue. The homeowner reported an intruder armed with a knife in her home.

Police were in the area already looking for the suspect due to previous reported crimes and saw the suspect running from the home, according to Cottage Grove Police Captain Pete Koerner. The teen was apprehended after a foot pursuit.

Police said the teen admitted to multiple crimes and that he tried to break into at least 100 vehicles in the Hinton Heights and Auburn Woods areas of Cottage Grove. He also confronted a female walking on a path in the same neighborhood.

The teen also said he knocked on doors to see if anyone was home; if someone answered, he would ask for a friend and then leave, according to police.

Police reminded residents to lock their vehicles, don't leave valuables in vehicles, lock the doors to their home and report all suspicious behavior.
