South Washington County Weekend Planner

Beginning with the Washington County Fair, families have a wide variety of weekend activities from which to choose.

Events at the 140th annual Washington County Fair run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds in Lake Elmo. Admission is $7 for adults, 16 and older and $4 for kids, ages 6 to 15. Parking is free. Activities include amateur talent shows, horse shows, animal judging, grandstand events, exhibits and food vendors. For a complete schedule, visit

Free garage sale

The congregation at Christ the Lord Lutheran church is hosting a free garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday Aug. 5 and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6. Snacks will be available for 25 cents and browsers can register to win a gift card to a local restaurant. The church is located at the corner of 90th Street and Highway 19/Keats Ave., across from the Washington County Service Center.

Everyone is invited to celebrate community gardens from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at the food shelf garden at Guardian Angels Church, 8260 Fourth St. N. in Oakdale. Visitors may see gardeners in action and taste produce. There will be activities for children throughout the morning. The celebration, sponsored by the non-profit group, Gardening Matters, will take place at gardens metrowide. See the Gardening Matters website for times and locations of all participating gardens:

The congregation at St. Rita's Church in Cottage Grove is hosting a two-day barbecue benefit at Von Hanson's Meats, 9040 Inwood Ave. in Cottage Grove.

Serving hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. Proceeds from the event will go to the church's sister parish, Los Santos Martires in Chimbota, Peru, and an orphanage in Tanzania, Africa.

VFW corn feed

Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 is hosting a corn feed from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday Aug 5, at the Red Barn, 9260 East Point Douglas Road in Cottage Grove. The public is invited for corn plus hamburgers, brats, French fries and hot dogs. The cost is $2 for hamburgers and brats and $1 for an ear of corn dipped in butter. Barn Bash II music benefit

Barn Bash II, a benefit for Second Harvest Heartland, will offer music with live performances and The FundRaiser on the Wheels of Steel with special guest DJ Pappy from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Cottage Grove VFW, 9260 East Point Douglas Road.

Indoor garage sale at Red Rock

The residents at Red Rock Manor, 1421 10th Ave. in Newport, invite everyone to their indoor garage and bake sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. There will be clothes, puzzles and lots of miscellaneous.

Dessert, concert on the lawn

The Hastings Concert Association is sponsoring a free concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the LeDuc Historic Estate, 1629 Vermillion St. in Hastings.

"The Squires," a classic rock and polka dance band, will is the featured entertainment.

If you go, take a chair or blanket. In case of rain, the concert will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 400 Ninth St. West. Homemade pies will be sold prior to the performance, along with ice cream and beverages.
