Neighborhood parties planned for tonight in south Washington County
Grills will fire and potato salad scarfed tonight as south Washington County residents gather for annual National Night Out and Night to Unite celebrations and block parties.
The names of Tuesday night's events might vary, but their aims do not: gather neighbors for a night of getting to know each other and public safety officials in an effort to heighten community awareness and prevent crime.
Newport residents can gather from 6:30 to 8 pm at Newport Lutheran Church, 900 15th St., for music, games for kids, police and fire displays and food and refreshments at a citywide Night to Unite event. Attendees are encouraged to donate cash and perishable food items to the Friends in Need Food Shelf in St. Paul Park.
Cottage Grove boasts more than 30 neighborhood Night to Unite celebrations across the city. Public safety and fire officials will drop in block parties for brief demonstrations and to visit with residents. Cottage Grove City Council members will also make the rounds.
St. Paul Park residents will gather at the city's 10th annual National Night Out from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Park, 1345 Laurel Ave. Free hot dogs and pop will be provided as long as they last by the St. Paul Park-Newport Lions Club. The event will include demonstrations, displays and booths with information about public safety.
