Heat wave drags on; south Washington County under excessive heat warning

Another day of lens-fogging, brow-mopping, AC-stressing heat on Wednesday has south Washington County and much of the region under an excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in Cottage Grove had risen to 96 degrees by 2 p.m., and with dew point readings above 72 degrees it feels more like 104, according to the weather service.

That has the weather service warning residents of a higher risk of heat-related illness. People are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, drink plenty of fluids, and stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible.

But, relief is in sight: despite the fourth day of soaring temperatures and tropical humidity levels, Thursday promises cooler temps -- relatively, cooler anyway -- with a highs in the mid-80s forecast, and dew points half of yesterday's muggy, record-setting readings of 80-and-above.
