SEVERE WEATHER: Warning issued as powerful storm hits south Washington County

Storms that may pack winds of up to 70 miles per hour and hail 1- to 2-inches in diameter are cutting across the metro area toward south Washington County, the National Weather Service reports.

Soutwestern Washington, Dakota, southern Ramsey and southeastern Hennepin counties are under a severe thunderstorm until at least 12:30 p.m. High winds and heavy rain felled trees and knocked power out to some in the northwest metro as storms rolled through late Tuesday morning. There was also a report of a funnel cloud spotted at Interstate 35E and Yankee Doodle Road in Eagan.

The powerful storms follow days of sweltering heat and humidity in the Twin Cities area. Temperatures are expected to rise near 100 degrees Wednesday, with a heat index of around 115, the weather service has forecast.
