Garage sale giving

One person's junk is another person's treasure.

East Ridge High School will be getting in the garage sale spirit on May 15 when the National Honor Society holds a garage sale in conjunction with the annual Woodbury Lions Club Garage Sale.

"I'm pretty sure we've had a guest in our household during the Lions Garage Sale every single year," National Honor Society vice president Joaquin Valdes said. "(The garage sale) is a huge draw because it's kind of a spectacular thing to have a whole community in a giant effort to redistribute what they have -- it's almost like a shifting of supplies."

The group's involvement with the Lions Garage Sale developed out of its need to have an end-of-the-year project, and not really knowing where to start.

National Honor Society partnered with the nonprofit organization, Reaching U, which donates money to Uruguay.

Valdes said Reaching U provides money to women and children in the country of Uruguay in a variety of areas. The area that East Ridge is most interested in supporting is education, he said.

"We think that's really cool on our part because we're an education facility," Valdes said. "East Ridge has a lot of opportunities and we know we're very lucky to be here."

National Honor Society will donate 60 percent of the money from the garage sale to Reaching U. The remaining money will go toward reimbursements.

There will be a Reaching U information booth set up at the garage sale.

National Honor Society is looking to the community for garage sale donations, whether they be clothing, home furnishing, toys or other items (except for food), club president Kate Kelzenberg said.

Large furniture items can only be brought on the day of the garage sale and must be picked up if they do not sell.

Hot dogs, chips and pop will also be available for sale during the garage sale.

Kelzenberg said they'll donate all unsold items to a charity in St. Paul.

"It's a win-win-win situation," she said. "If we don't sell anything or it rains out, we still have items to donate to charity and we call it a good day. Any way it goes, it will end well."

The East Ridge High School National Honor Society's garage sale will be May 15, starting at 8 a.m., outside the activities entrance at the school. National Honor Society will accept community donations for the garage sale Monday through Friday from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. at the school.
