Bulletin Pet of the Week: Cooper

Newly certified therapy dog, Cooper Isaac, dispensed his special brand of friendly contact recently on a visit with All Saints Lutheran Church senior pastor Jules Erickson to All Saints parishioner Ginny Christiansen, at a local nursing home.

Cooper is a Goldendoodle that has been certified through All Breed Obedience School in Woodbury, according to Erickson.

"It's a great gift to give people the joy that comes through Cooper," she said. "People are always amazed that Cooper is actually a certified therapy dog because he's so wild, but the strange thing is, once I tell him that we are 'going to work' he clicks into a different gear and mellows out."

Erickson has also been trained to bring Cooper into individual homes, and even as a guest at All Saints Lutheran Church. "It is amazing to see people perk up when Cooper and I come into a nursing home," she said. "The residents talk more to him than they do to me."

She said since Cooper received certification they've been to at least four different care giving facilities in the area.

Cooper was certified through the Delta Society Pet Therapy certification program at All Breed Obedience School. According to the Delta Web site, "Animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy are the preferred terms used by Delta Society as they suggest that the animal is the motivating force that enhances treatment provided by a well-trained person."
