Hearing on Highway 61 Hastings bridge scheduled

Area residents, commuters and businesses are invited to attend an open house on May 20 about the replacement of the Highway 61 Hastings bridge. The open house will be held from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hastings City Hall, at 101 4th St. East in Hastings.

Formal presentations will be held at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

At the hearing, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will present the environmental assessment for the Highway 61 Hastings Bridge replacement. The Environmental Assessment documents the purpose and need for the project, along with the anticipated social, economic and environmental impacts.

Comment cards will be available at the hearing for the public to provide written input and a court reporter will be available to record verbal comments. The public will have an opportunity to comment on the Environmental Assessment through 4:30 p.m., June 17.

This project proposes to replace the existing two-lane Highway 61 Bridge over the Mississippi River in the city of Hastings with a four-lane bridge, 12-foot bike/pedestrian trail. The project includes a service road north of the bridge for safer access to Highway 61 from local businesses. Three new bridge alternatives are under consideration: Box Girder Twin Bridges, Tied Arch Single Bridge and Cable Single Bridge. The proposed project will increase capacity and improve safety, both for pedestrians and motorists.
