Dance team added at Park

Past efforts to start and continue a dance team at Park High School withered away, but Kari Uetz wanted to get one started again after two years of encouraging a dance team at Cottage Grove Junior High School.

"They look forward to being part of a dance team when they come here," Uetz said, during tryouts last month in the Activity Center. "Dance is very big in Cottage Grove and Woodbury. The girls are really involved."

Based on the number of enthusiastic young women who tried out, the effort seems on its way to success with a varsity team and a junior varsity team, an arrangement not done in the past.

The girls will also be selected on ability and not their grade level as has been done in the past.

Tryouts consisted of learning one short routine and doing several types of kicks, turns, leaps and jumps before an independent panel of judges.

Girls who make the teams will be performing during the winter sports season from November to March.

The team will be performance-based and will dance mainly at school events, such as basketball games and pep fests. The season will also include some weekend competitions, but teams will not compete under the Minnesota State High School League, according to Uetz.

The season might include a performance during a Minnesota Timberwolves game.

Girls who made the team will pay a $150 participation fee.

Team members will be attending a summer dance team camp in July at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
