Weekend planner: Fire station open houses Thursday, Saturday


FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE -- All four Cottage Grove fire stations are hosting open houses from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, during national Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned." Everyone is invited for demonstrations, refreshments and an opportunity to inspect fire fighting equipment and shake hands with area firefighters.


LIBRARY BOOK SALE -- Park Grove Branch Library, 7900 Hemingway Ave., in Cottage Grove, is holding its annual used book sale during regular hours Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9 to 11. Items for sale will include books for adults and youth, CDs, DVDs and books on tape.


ST. PAUL PARK FIRE HALL OPEN HOUSE -- St. Paul Park firefighters plan a ladder and hose demonstration at 10:30 a.m. and a vehicle extrication at 11 a.m. along with games, prizes, snacks and a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog at their open house, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. Everyone is invited to the fire hall, 600 Portland Ave., in St. Paul Park.

PULLMAN CARNIVAL -- Families and students are invited to the 11th annual fall carnival at Pullman Elementary School, 1260 Selby Avenue, in St. Paul Park, 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

NEWPORT HISTORY WALK -- The Newport History and Parks Walk is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 10. Maps for the self-guided stroll can be picked up at Pioneer Park between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Cash or non-perishable food donations to the Friends in Need Food Shelf are suggested, but not required, to take part in the walk.

SHARING GHOST STORIES -- Former Newport resident Jerry Shaver and Brent Peterson, Washington County Historical Society director, will present tales of ghosts in the St. Croix Valley at the Saturday, Oct. 10 meeting of the South Washington Heritage Society. The group will meet at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Park City Hall, 600 Portland Ave. Everyone is invited to attend and bring their own ghost tales.

SCANDINAVIAN WOODCARVING -- Sons of Norway Hjemkomst Lodge 599 member, Mel Agen, will give a Power Point presentation on the Scandinavian roots of woodcarving at lodge's Oct. 11 meeting, 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 400 West Ninth St., in Hastings. All nationalities are welcome to attend. A social hour will follow the presentation.


JOINING 4-H -- Anyone interested in joining 4-H is invited to a Country Cousins meeting at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 11 at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 90th Street and County Road 19, in Cottage Grove.


CROPWALK -- The south Washington County Crop Hunger Walk will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Cottage Grove United Church of Christ, at the corner of Lamar Boulevard and 70th Street. Everyone is invited to participate. Twenty-five percent of the total funds collected will be donated to Friends in Need Food Shelf, in St. Paul Park and the remainder will support the ministry of the Church World Service.
