Guitarist Joe Filipovich and Brazilian harmonica player Indiara Sfair will give a free concert April 5 from 8-11 p.m. at Opinion Brewing, 374 21st St. in Newport.

Filipovich, a 2003 Park High School graduate, records and tours as a solo artist and with his blues band Crooked Dice. Sfair, a blues and jazz virtuoso and songwriter, was born in the southern city of Curitiba in Brazil.

She met Filipovich in Nashville during her US tour. He convinced her to add some Twin Cities dates to her schedule.

Filipovich, who records as Joey Flip, said they’re counting on the blues to bridge the language barrier. He doesn’t know much Portuguese, the primary language in Brazil, and Sfair’s English is limited.

“There is a language barrier but you’re using music to communicate and it’s the coolest thing,” he said.

Sfair will also join Filipovich and other musicians for the  2nd annual Stevie Ray Vaughan Show set for April 8 at the Cabooze in Minneapolis.
