Denny McNamara Viewpoint: Despite deficit, state's economic projections positive
I certainly think we should feel good about the economic status of our state as we go from a GOP- to DFL-led legislature. Hopefully lawmakers can show some spending restraint as we did the past two years. If so, the new legislative majority should have relatively few problems balancing this budget. Stay tuned.By Denny McNamara , December 30, 2012
Katie Sieben Viewpoint: Early voting would provide convenience, confidence to voters
The large number of people voting before Election Day coupled with the long lines and waiting times at polling places demonstrates the growing demand by voters to have more convenience in exercising their voting rights.By Katie Sieben , December 30, 2012
Judy Spooner Viewpoint: Through their eyes, meaning of holiday season emerges
Four fifth-graders from Sean Duncanson’s class at Grey Cloud Elementary School talked to me last week. I asked them if the holidays are getting too commercial and what the season means to them.By Judy Spooner , December 16, 2012

Judy Spooner Viewpoint: Students learning math a new way
Since the beginning of school last fall, I’ve been in at least five middle school math classes for various stories with kids who have a range of math abilities. They won’t hit the high schools for several years, but I can say for sure that math scores are going up because of outstanding District 833 middle school teachers.By Judy Spooner , December 09, 2012
Judy Spooner Viewpoint: Lots of craziness at 'Gray Thursday'
At the front of the line were a group of men from St. Paul Park who seemed to be having a good time. I asked them if they had been drinking or were just crazy to be waiting outside during the first blast of winter. “A little of both,” they said.By Judy Spooner , December 02, 2012
Judy Spooner Viewpoint: Friendly wisecracks pervade Grey Cloud meetings
Grey Cloud Island Township Board Chair Dick Adams, in a serious vein, opened the November meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance as usual last week. Then, silliness took over.By Judy Spooner , November 25, 2012
Viewpoint: Asian carp on the Mississippi march
Like many of our native fish, Asian carp eat algae and other plankton, but because they are so big they eat a lot more of it. For this reason, they have the potential to quickly knock an aquatic food web out of balance.By Angie Hong , November 22, 2012

Candidate Viewpoint: Newport City Council candidate Bill Sumner
During the past four years Mayor Tim Geraghty, myself with other council members and the dedicated new administrator and our capable office staff have found many ways to strengthen the economic position of the city.By Bill Sumner , October 31, 2012
Candidate Viewpoint: Newport City Council candidate Katy McElwee-Stevens
Going forward I will serve the residents of Newport with respect and integrity. I will work to better Newport, its appearance, its reputation and its economy.By Katy McElwee-Stevens , October 31, 2012
Candidate Viewpoint: Newport City Council candidate Tom Ingemann
The business community is pleased with the current climate in this city as far as a business goes. There has been nothing but positive comments from citizens as far as what they think about their city. I know the residents of the city of Newport are very smart and know what is going on in their city, and are not hoodwinked by a lot of broken promises, nonexistent connections and glorified nonsense.By Tom Ingemann , October 31, 2012
Candidate Viewpoint: Newport City Council candidate Dan Flood
When I tell most people that I am running for council, the most common reactions I get are statements of good luck, or the question, “Why would you put yourself through that?” Let me be very clear on this point. I am running because I believe that we can do better than our current council and Newport needs better.By Dan Flood , October 31, 2012
Candidate Viewpoint: Newport Mayor Tim Geraghty
I hope before going into the voting booth, you will review the qualifications and records of each of the candidates and do what you feel is best for our city and its citizens. Thank you for allowing me to serve the city of Newport.By Tim Geraghty , October 31, 2012
Candidate Viewpoint: Newport mayor candidate Steven Gallagher
Two years ago I became a member of the Newport City Council after seeing the need to improve the atmosphere and perception within the city. However, this work cannot be done with the current leadership; therefore, I am asking for your vote to become the mayor, in this critical time, for our great city.By Steven Gallagher , October 31, 2012
