Newport to celebrate its Civil War role this weekend
This weekend, a Newport group dedicated to preserving and celebrating the city’s history will lead a celebration of Company B’s exploits at Pioneer Park, the site where they gathered 150 years ago.
“It’s one of the relatively few places in Minnesota that has a direct, physical connection with the American Civil War,” said Robert Vogel, a historian who works with the Newport Heritage Preservation Commission. “It’s one of the few places you can go stand in the same spot that soldiers used.”
