Washington County commissioners have delayed a vote on extending the county’s decades-long agreement with a private Newport waste-to-energy facility that processes much of the county’s household garbage but remains heavily subsidized by taxpayer dollars.
A Minnesota Pollution Control Agency board on Tuesday rejected a petition for a deeper environmental review of 3M’s plan to import hazardous waste from outside the company to its Cottage Grove incinerator.
A Minnesota Pollution Control Agency official said there was nothing to keep the agency from approving new permits for the facility that would allow the company to burn non-3M waste. The company's plan is 'technically adequate,' the state agency said.
MPCA officials tell residents there is nothing in 3M’s proposal to begin burning flammable wastes from sources outside the company that would prevent the agency from approving new permits for the facility.
