Suburban East Conference Championships, Saturday, Feb. 13

The Park wrestling team finished in third place while East Ridge finished in 10th at the Suburban East Conference championships, held Saturday, Feb. 13 at Forest Lake High School.


Park junior Ron Detzler finished in fourth place at 140 pounds at the Suburban East Conference championships, held Saturday, Feb. 13 at Forest Lake High School. In the tournament, Park totaled 158 points, to finish behind SEC champion Hastings (250.5 points) and runner-up Forest Lake (185 points).

  • Park senior Jeremy Simmons finished fourth at 130 pounds. In all, Park had 12 of 12 wrestlers competing in the tournament finish in the top six places.
  • Gavin Rhode earned sixth place for the Wolfpack at 119 pounds.
  • Park sophomore David Ayers earned fifth place at 125 pounds.
  • Park senior Deron Giadyu finished runner-up at 152 pounds earning All-Conference. Giadyu was one of three Wolfpack wrestlers to earn All-Conference honors.
  • Park's Deron Giadyu, who won the SEC championship at 152 pounds last season, fell just short of a repeat bid — losing his championship match 4-0 to Hastings’ Tyler Rohr. Giadyu is currently 23-6 on the year and is ranked ninth in Class 3A at 152 pounds.
  • Park senior Alex Hansen finished in third place at 135 pounds, earning All-Conference Honorable Mention.
  • Park junior Blake Berney took fifth place at 145 pounds.
  • Park senior Jared Flaata won the Suburban East Conference championship at 160 pounds — the lone Wolfpack wrestler to do so.
  • Jared Flaata — who is ranked fifth in Class 3A at 160 pounds an is 31-1 on the year — earned his first conference championship with a 4-0 decision over ninth-ranked Stillwater senior Duncan Secor.
  • Park senior Alex Ringhand finished runner-up at 189 pounds, earning All-Conference. The un-ranked Ringhand (20-11) surprised the field with a third-period pin of Stillwater junior Max Finizio — a wrestler he lost twice to in the regular season — before being beaten 5-1 by Woodbury senior C.J. Hayes, who is ranked fifth in Class 3A in the weight class.
  • East Ridge junior Clay Hawken finished in sixth place at 130 pounds. In all, four Raptors wrestlers finished in the top six places at the tournament.
  • East Ridge sophomore Jon Balagot finished in fourth place at 145 pounds.
  • East Ridge Hans Horning and the Raptors earned 39 points total, finishing behind ninth-place Cretin-Derham Hall, which had 41 points.
  • East Ridge junior Nick Bachmann had the Raptors' highest finish at the tournament, earning third place and All-Conference honorable mention honors. At the tournament, Bachmann defeated White Bear Lake’s Beau Bibeau 11-5 in the third-place match. Bachmann’s lone loss of the tournament was to Park's Flaata, who won the SEC title.
