Susan Rae Swanson, 67

Susan Rae Swanson, age 67, formerly of Cottage Grove, died on Feb. 20, in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Susan Rae Swanson, July 2, 1944 - Feb. 20, 2012

Susan Rae Swanson was born in Albert Lea, Minn., to Raymond and Lois Severtson, and later adopted by Clifford Brown after Raymond’s death in World War II. Sue cherished her childhood years in Albert Lea and the many friendships she developed within her church and schools.

In high school, she met the man who would eventually become her husband. Sue and Ron dated throughout high school and college and, after a long engagement, finally married during their last year at Mankato State University.

Sue’s proudest professional accomplishment was providing daycare in her home over the course of 15 years. During those years, Sue cared for as many as ten children at one time and always considered it an honor and a privilege to be part of their lives. Many of the families who entrusted Sue with the care of their children became lifelong friends.

Sue was blessed to be surrounded by a large community of family and friends throughout her life. Her family was her pride and joy, but her close friends provided constant encouragement and support through many debilitating conditions related to her diabetes over 40 years of battling the disease.

Sue was an eternally optimistic person who inspired many people with her courage, strength, and ever-present smile, all of which will be forever missed by her family, friends, and the many communities she was part of.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7000 Hinton Ave. S, Cottage Grove. Interment is at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Family requests donations to ABC Preschool at Crossroads Church in Woodbury or American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
