Check the last two paragraphs of this article from MPR out. Did city officials not know about this? Who is calling the shots at city hall, 3M? It’s time to clean up more than the air or groundwater in Cottage Grove. City hall seems polluted as well! http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/02/04/cottage-grove-3m-pollution-pushback/

3M exports so many of their top brands overseas that if every man woman and child in Washington County (hell, all of MN really) never used another 3M product as long as they lived, 3M wouldn't even notice, let alone modify their policies for polluting land and waterways and then just paying the pollution fee.

Stop buying scotch tape, post it notes and everything else 3M manufactures - the power of consumerism will send a message better than any political arena or court room.

As long as we allow big corporations to violate pollution laws by paying a penalty fee after the fact, we endorse the destruction of our environment uncategorically.

Good catch John! I just read it for myself. I like Mayor Bailey's comments about how this does even more to show the trust factor 3M once had with citizens of CG is worse than ever. This is a company that used to have ethics, but those days are long gone. http://www.startribune.com/local/83773837.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUac8HEaDiaMDCinchO7DUs

Check the Star Trib today about 3M and Dupont meeting with the EPA. The story in this article leaves an even worse taste. Looking at the earlier Pioneer Press article I'm really starting to wonder who's helping us and who's not.

Is there a requirement that all incoming solvents be tested for heavy metals, toxins and/or cancer causing chemicals prior to burning? Any hazardous wastes let in to our community and burned in the incinerator have a lifetime effect that are almost impossible to cleanup instead of simply banning them from the community. I know that 3M has had permission to burn its own solvents from other 3M locations and has had many problems controlling the materials. Explosions of dangerous materials have damaged incinerator equipment in the past. If others are allowed to dump dangerous chemicals at the site and they are burned, what will be the safe radius to live from the site? I hope the city council and mayor wake up to this danger and start representing the people of Cottage Grove.

Forget city hall, you’d have to get a map to see which area is handling the reception of customers. You need to go directly to the mayor and council people. It doesn’t appear city hall is trying to represent our best interests and the mayor and council are the people who are allowing it!
