Performance poet Sapphire

Performance poet Sapphire, author of the book that inspired the Academy Award-winning movie “Precious,” will give a reading and commentary at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the West Campus Theatre, at Century College, in White Bear Lake. The event is free and open to the public. Sapphire’s books and poems on topics such as child abuse, domestic violence and social justice highlight the challenges faced by youth, women and individuals striving to achieve upward mobility. Sapphire’s poetry has been called “spiky and uncompromising.”
