Raiders claim first conference baseball title in 34 years

The Hudson Raider baseball team clinched its first conference championship since 1979 Tuesday, May 21, by sweeping a doubleheader from Eau Claire North, 4-2 and 5-3, at Eau Claire’s Carson Park. Hudson finished the season all alone in first place in the Big Rivers Conference with a record of 11-1.

The Raider baseball team’s 2013 hit parade continued as it exploded for 24 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Rice Lake but came to an abrupt halt Friday at home against Eau Claire Memorial as the Raiders were shut out for the first time in 71 games, 6-0.

The Raider softball team looked in midseason form in its first home doubleheader of the season last Tuesday against Rice Lake, pounding out 25 hits, including four home runs, and committing just one error while sweeping the Warriors 11-1 and 10-1.

The Raider girls’ soccer team did its best to regroup following an emotional halftime ceremony in remembrance of former teammate Jordan Costello last Tuesday night against Eau Claire North.

After dropping its Big Rivers Conference opener to perennial conference powerhouse Eau Claire Memorial, 6-1, last Thursday, the Raider boys’ tennis team bounced back in a big way by capturing the team title at Saturday’s Royal/Raptor Invitational in Woodbury.

The Raider boys’ tennis team should have 14 matches in by now. Instead it’s played just four, including three last Saturday, April 20 at the Wausau West Invitational.

Hudson’s boys posted five first place finishes, including two by senior Brandon D’Andrea in the sprint events, on their way to a first place team finish at the inaugural Border Battle Track and Field Meet last Friday at UW-River Falls’ Knowles Fieldhouse.

The Raider girls’ soccer team finally ventured outside last Tuesday, April 16, not to practice, but to play its first game.

Weather impacting Raider spring sports schedules

In a perfect world, the Raider baseball team would have eight games under its belt by this point of the season, Hudson’s girls’ soccer would be seven games into its schedule, and the boys’ golf team would have played two 18-hole invitationals and two nine-hole conference mini-meets by now.
