The East Ridge wrestling team came out with guns blazing on Thursday, Jan. 26 against strong Suburban East Conference foe Mounds View, building an 18-6 lead. The Mustangs, however, had too many weapons at the bottom of their lineup for the Raptors to overcome, and East Ridge fell 51-24.
"I was very pleased with the way we wrestled tonight," said East Ridge head coach Hans Horning. "We have talked about confidence, intensity and intimidation a great deal lately and the kids responded. They came out intent to win. They wrestled aggressively and confidently. I was very proud of how we looked tonight."
The Raptors started the night with three consecutive wins. At 106 pounds, eighth grader MJ Okada won by decision. Reid Lyden, a sophomore, won by fall at 113 and sophomore Jake Trevis earned a hard-fought 9-7 decision at 120 pounds.
"Jake wrestled a superb match against a good opponent,” Horning said. “I have been waiting for 'that' Jake Trevis to show up and he finally did."
Also winning for the Raptors were freshmen Emilio Huerta, earning a fall at 132 pounds, and sophomore Nate Tigges with a fall at 182 pounds.
Mounds View's strength is in their upper weights and it showed as they won eight of the final nine matches, six by fall.
