East Ridge girls swimming & diving: Karrow, Treadway make state meet

East Ridge junior Jenna Karrow will defend her diving state championship and senior swimmer Rachel Treadway qualified for the state meet for the Raptors at the Section 3AA swim finals on Friday, Nov. 11, at Richfield Middle School.

As a team, East Ridge finished in fifth place with 250 points. Rosemount earned the section championship with 427.5 points.

Karrow, who won the Class AA state diving title last year, set new section and pool diving records in the section meet with a score of 493.4 points on Thursday, Nov. 10, at Cottage Grove Middle School to reach state.

The four divers who qualified for the state meet were all from District 833 schools. Along with Karrow, Woodbury senior Emily Bonfig took second place, Woodbury junior Lauren Puglisi earned third place and Park senior Ali Ramey placed fourth.

Treadway joins Karrow and the other district divers at the state meet, after earning second place in the 100-yard butterfly.

At sections, the top two finishers in each event qualify for state, along with any swimmer who eclipses the qualifying time.

Treadway swam to a time of 1 minute, 1.05 seconds in the 100 butterfly final to make it to state. Eagan senior MacKenzie Heller won the race with a 1:00.72 time. In addition to her state-qualifying finish in the butterfly, Treadway also set new East Ridge records in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:13.54) and in the 400-yard freestyle relay – along with senior Melanie Rabino, sophomore Brianna Schmitt and sophomore Maddy Peters – in a time of 3:44.31.

A number of East Ridge swimmers reached the finals out of the section preliminary round. Peters just missed a state berth in the 100-yard freestyle, taking third place with a time of 55.19. Woodbury junior Mikayla Mayer won the event with a time of 53.46 and the state qualifying time is 53.82. Also, sophomore Brianna Schmitt took 14th in the 100 free with a time of 58.35. Peters also placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.58. Woodbury’s Mayer won the event in a time of 24.80 and the state-qualifying time is 24.72. Schmitt placed 10th in the event as well. Also, Rabino finished fifth, individually, in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:24.56, followed by Marissa Burleigh, who was 10th in the event and Rabino was also sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.62. Additionally, the East Ridge 200-yard medley relay team of Rabino, sophomore Taylor Blatchford, Treadway and Peters took sixth with a time of 1:56.84, junior Molly Patt Horan and eighth-grader Emily Dahl took 10th and 14th in the 200-yard freestyle, respectively, Blatchford and eighth-grader Kayla Maata took 13th and 16th, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley,

Maata was also 11th in the 100 butterfly, followed by senior Anna Moynihan, who was 16th in the event.

The 2011 girls state swimming and diving championship takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 to 19, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Diving preliminaries kick off the competition on Thursday, followed by swimming prelims on Friday, Nov. 18, and all swimming and diving finals on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Class AA finals start at 6 p.m. Saturday.
