St. Paul Park's Broadway Avenue water tower to get makeover

Tower needs painting, sandblasting

St. Paul Park’s Broadway Avenue water tower provides clean water to local residents but city officials say the tower itself needs cleaning.

St. Paul Park City Administrator Kevin Walsh told the City Council early last week that while the Broadway Avenue water tower is not in disrepair, it is in need of “preventative” work, such as painting and sandblasting.

The tower was inspected in November 2011, Walsh said, and inspection officials stated that repairs were needed within three years. The reconditioning project, part of St. Paul Park’s 2013 capital improvement plan, would include repainting and sandblasting the interior and exterior of the tower, with the work concentrated on the top of the tower.

“If we don’t do this project in the next year or two, you could have more deterioration and the possibility of getting rainwater into the water supply,” Walsh said.

Walsh added that the project is still in preliminary stages and the council would look at estimated costs in the near future. With the council’s March 4 approval, he said the city could begin seeking engineering bids.
