Cottage Grove City Council supports Mississippi river bicycle trail

Trail signs expected in time for 2013 spring cycling

With the official start of spring one week away, bicycling enthusiasts soon will be hitting the well-traveled paths of the 600-mile long Mississippi River Trail (MRT) system.

The Cottage Grove City Council on March 6 expressed its support of the MRT system, and the designation of the stretch of trail from Elk River, through Cottage Grove, to Hastings as the metro portion.

The metro trail section is the third and final segment of the MRT system the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has nominated to be part of the United States Bicycle Route. The MRT system is the first bicycle system in the country to be recognized as a national route.

According to MnDOT, signs delineating the metro portion of the MRT system are expected to be posted in time for the 2013 spring cycling season.
