Upstart Rosemount upset the East Ridge boys basketball team in the opening round of the Section 3AAAA tournament.
The No. 2-seeded Raptors (18-8) fell to the No. 7-seeded Irish 67-62 on East Ridge’s home court, ending the Raptors’ season.
Rosemount took a 23-19 lead at the half and held on, despite a second-half shootout. After the break, the two teams combined for 87 points. The Irish (8-19) outscored East Ridge 44-43.
East Ridge junior guard Jake Knupp led all scorers with a game-high 20 points in the losing effort. Sophomore point guard Sid Tomes chipped in eight points as well, but no other Raptor was in double digits.
Nine different players scored for Rosemount, led by Cole Nothwick with 18 points.
With the win, Rosemount advanced to the semifinals against sixth-seed Henry Sibley, which upset third-seeded Eagan in the first round.
East Ridge now must say good-bye to two seniors – center Conrad Sexe and Shane Johnson – but is set to return 15 players from this year’s youthful roster.
