Cottage Grove garage fire started in vehicle

A Cottage Grove woman stopped at home while running errands, but then was stopped in her tracks as she went to leave several minutes later.
Her car had started on fire in her garage.
The woman called 911 when she saw smoke coming from under the vehicle shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. The fire spread from the vehicle to the garage but did not extend to the attached home, Cottage Grove Fire Chief Rick Redenius said.
Thick black smoke billowed from the garage at 6941 Homestead Ave. as firefighters arrived. The home is northeast of 70th Street and Hinton Avenue.
The interior of the garage was damaged and the vehicle that was parked in the garage sustained major fire damage. Redenius said the home sustained some smoke damage.
The woman did not suffer any major injuries, but did request help from EMTs on scene because she said she was panicking and having trouble breathing. The woman's husband, who arrived on scene after she called 911, also was checked by an emergency crew because he had inhaled smoke, Redenius said.
Three dogs that were outside in the back of the home and garage were not injured.
Woodbury firefighters assisted Cottage Grove on the call.
