Newport police reports for Feb. 7: Theft, assault, property damage

Recently reported criminal activity in Newport.

Theft

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported two simultaneous gas drive-offs on Jan. 23. Two vehicles pulled up to gas pumps. The drivers told the clerk they would pay inside but it seemed suspicious so the clerk wrote down the vehicle license plates, according to the report. When the two men were done pumping gas — $40 worth in one, $44 in the other — they got in the vehicles and drove off. Police have been unable to locate the suspects.

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a $46 gas drive-off Jan. 26.

Assault

A 19-year-old Newport man was arrested on suspicion of an outstanding warrant, obstruction with force, domestic assault, criminal damage to property and assault following a Jan. 29 incident in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue. As police responded to the home for the assault call, they also arrested a 20-year-old Newport man for suspected drunken driving.

Property damage

Xcel Energy, 3000 Maxwell Ave., reported Jan. 25 that a section of chain-link fence at the property had been cut and removed. Damage estimated at $200.
