The South Washington County Bulletin was awarded for its sports reporting and for the use of public records in its coverage of a former South Washington County Schools superintendent’s dismissal.
The Bulletin earned a first-place sports reporting award in its division at the Minnesota Newspaper Convention, held Jan. 24-25 in Bloomington. Judges applauded the newspaper’s mix of high school athletic feature stories, game coverage and profiles.
The newspaper also picked up a first-place award for using email records it obtained from District 833 School Board members through the state Data Practices Act to shed light on the board’s decision to not renew Mark Porter’s superintendent contract. It competed against all weekly newspapers.
The awards were part of MNA’s 2011-12 Better Newspaper Contest.
Last year, the Bulletin took second place in its division for general reporting.
