The Park competition dance team reached a number of goals at its invitational meet at Henry Sibley High School on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Park finished in ninth place in the High Kick competition and ninth in the Jazz/Funk contest at the meet.

At the competitions, teams are scored on two three minute performances. At the meets, dance teams compete in two categories – high kick and jazz/funk. Teams are scored on 10, 10-point categories ranging from difficulty of skills and choreography to execution and technique. Each score sheet is comprised of 84 elements the dancers are judged on.

Park assistant coach Veronica Hemmingsen said before the meet, the team had three goals for the High Kick squad and three goals for the Jazz/Funk squad. The High Kick team reached two out of its three goals at the meet. No. 1 was to eliminate any fours on the score sheet (out of 10) and, secondly, to score an eight in a category, which they achieved in the Execution - Degree of Accuracy category. The Jazz/Funk team reached one of their goals – eliminating any threes from the score sheet.

“Based on these goals alone, the team and coaching staff are extremely pleased with how the competition went,” Hemmingsen said. “Each week they’re improving more and more and by reaching these goals, it helps solidify that they’re on the right track of reaching future goals.”

Park will compete in the Suburban East Conference finals on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Cretin-Derham Hall High School. At the conference finals, the teams’ scores count for double and is added to their previous two conference scores for a final conference score and placing.

“The fans really do help the girls get pumped and keep going throughout the routine,” Hemmingsen said. “We hope they come out to Cretin-Derham Hall this Wednesday.”
