Lori Kugel is living the dream.
Creating the winning logo for the 2013 Cottage Grove Strawberry Fest is just one more thing to cross off her “bucket list,” she said.
Kugel knew that if her logo won, that she'd be invited to be grand marshal for the Strawberry Fest parade.
“I love parades,” she said. “I stand on the curb to get some of the candy thrown from the floats. I don't take any from the kids and often give them my candy. I'm kind of a big kid.”
Kugel, who works in a dental office, loves anything to do with strawberries including eating them and being the proud owner of a Strawberry Shortcake doll when she was younger.
“Cottage Grove knew what I liked,” she said.
After looking at a recent water bill, she saw a notice about the logo contest. While Kugel doesn't think of herself as creative, she had an idea in her head of what she wanted it to look like.
Her daughter, Ashley, however, is very creative and so are her many friends that Kugel regard as her children, also.
She asked one of the young women to draw up her idea and it worked, she said.
“I couldn't draw a stick person if my life depended on it,” she said.
Being in a parade has always been her dream and Kugel's spent time thinking about how to get into one.
She thought of entering the Klondike Kate contest for the St. Paul Winter Carnival. “I'm no beauty queen and I can't sing, so that wouldn't work,” Kugel said.
The grand marshal honor comes at a good time in her life and reminded her that “nobody's granted an extra day in this life.”
Her only sibling, a brother, died by suicide a year ago next month. He was her best friend and brought her many gifts and most of them were related to strawberries because he knew how much she liked them.
When the parade starts, she's certain he'll be there.
“Life is short,” Kugel said. “You need to realize how important families are.”
The 2013 Strawberry Fest will be June 13-17 at Kingston Park.
