At one of the top regular-season meets in the state, the Park boys swimming and diving team showed it belonged.
At the 2013 Maroon and Gold Invitational, held, Jan. 5 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, the Wolfpack took sixth place out of 16 teams in the Bronze (third-highest) Division with 293 points. Sartell St. Stephen won the meet with 490 points.
Park’s Adam Raymond earned first place for the Wolfpack in the 200-yard freestyle at the meet. The sophomore beat out 45 other swimmers in the race with a time of 1 minute, 50.9 seconds in the finals. In addition, Park senior Matt Henry had a time of 1:58.99 to take ninth, while freshman Aaron Lewis swam a time of 2:02.05 to take 18th in the event.
Park senior Michele Pau also had one of the Wolfpack’s best finishes, taking second place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.74 in the finals – just back of Fergus Falls junior Cal Mouritsen (50.19). Lewis also fared well in the 100 free, taking 17th (55.18).
Additionally, Pau also raced to fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.23 seconds. Sophomore Jarrett Mansergh fared well in the 50-yard freestyle, too, taking 18th place with a time of 24.47 seconds. Mansergh also had Park’s top time in the 100-yard butterfly, taking 10th place with a time of 1:00.27, followed by junior Eric Solem, who finished 18th with a time of 1:02.65.
Park senior Matt Henry shined in the 500-yard freestyle, taking seventh place overall with a time of 5:21.08. Eighth grader Mack Christianson wasn’t far back, taking 17th with a time of 5:41.85.
Solem had Park’s top finish in the 200-yard individual medley, taking 25th place with a time of 2:26.85. Also, Christianson finished 30th with a time of 2:29.32 in the 200 IM. In addition, senior Nick Popowitz had Park’s top finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.53, which was good for 20th and junior Kevin Riepe earned 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.54.
In relay events, Park’s 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle teams shined. The team of Henry, Raymond, Mansergh and Pau combined to take third place with a time of 3:29.78 – just back of first-place Andover (3:28.60.). The same combo of swimmers also had a time of 1:35.95 in the 200-yard free relay. Sartell St. Stephen (1:31.55) won the event. Also, Park’s 200-yard medley relay team (Popowitz, Riepe, Solem, Lewis) took 15th with a time of 1:54.23.
In diving, Park sophomore Nick Germscheid led the way, taking seventh place overall with a score of 160.70. Also, for Park, sophomore Kevin Rettger took 11th (139.10) and senior Nate Pearson took 15th (126.20).
Prior to the Maroon and Gold invite, Park fell 102-74 in a Suburban East Conference dual with Stillwater. The Wolfpack faced another elite SEC foe in East Ridge on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, Park will travel to Roseville to take on the Raiders in a conference meet on Thursday, Jan. 10. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
