Cottage Grove police prepare for Holiday Train parking, commuter traffic

With thousands expected to turn out for the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train’s stop in Cottage Grove Tuesday evening just as thousands of commuters return home from work, Cottage Grove public safety officials are taking a few extra precautions to make sure traffic flows smoothly in and out of the area surrounding the Youth Service Bureau building on West Point Douglas Road near where the event takes place.

Belden Boulevard northeast of Hadley Avenue will be closed at 4 p.m. in advance of the train’s scheduled 5:45 p.m. stop, routing all traffic headed to West Point Douglas Road — Metro Transit commuter buses, included — to Jamaica Avenue.

“The big thing will be as people park they need to show up on West Point Douglas from Jamaica [Avenue],” said Deputy Public Safety Director Pete Koerner said. “We don’t want them trying to get down from Belden and getting frustrated.”

Koerner said traffic is easier to control around the event when it is held on a weekend and encouraged attendees to park in the parking lot at the former The Rush nightclub on West Point Douglas Road rather than park in nearby residential neighborhoods or retail lots and walking to the event.

With police reserves helping direct traffic, Koerner said, “we don’t really anticipate there being any real problems.”
