For a youthful, rebuilding squad, it’s something to build on.
The Park boys basketball team earned its first win of the 2012-13 season with a 51-25 victory over South St. Paul on the road Friday night in South St. Paul.
The win snapped a 24-game losing streak dating back to last Dec. 13, when Park beat South St. Paul 60-45 at Park High School.
The Wolfpack (1-2) are fielding a youthful lineup this season. Its lone senior is forward Mike Broskoff. Park has eight juniors and five seniors on the roster currently.
Park shot 40 percent from the field and had nine different players score in the game, but it was the Wolfpack’s defense that lifted Park to victory. Park took a 21-6 halftime lead over the Packers (1-3) in the win and never looked back, outscoring the Packers 30-19 in the second half.
Park sophomore forward Aaron Gorres led the way in the win with a team-high 10 points and six rebounds. In addition, sophomore forward Connor Kvendru added 9 points and five rebounds and junior forward Jordan Pinnix chipped in eight points and three assists for the Wolfpack.
The win came on the heels of a close, 57-52 loss to North St. Paul on Tuesday at home.
Park had a 23-19 lead at the half over the Polars, but couldn’t hang on.
Junior guard Sully Brenke scored a season-high 27 points for the Wolfpack in the loss.
Park traveled to Red Wing (2-2) on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, the Wolfpack is at Simley (0-0) on Friday, Dec. 14, before beginning Suburban East Conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at home against Stillwater (2-0). Park is looking to snap a 58-game conference losing streak this season.
