Park girls hockey: Wolfpack tie Bears; edged by Mustangs in overtime

The Wolfpack had two leads Tuesday against the Mustangs but couldn’t hold on in a 4-3 overtime loss. Park took a 2-1 lead in the first period after Monica Martineau scored at the 12:34 mark, but the lead didn’t last long. Mounds View’s Bella Sutton tied it with her second goal of the period at 13:33.

Anna Keys put the Wolfpack up 3-2 in the second period with a power-play goal at 6:05 and the Wolfpack held that lead until the third period.

Kathryn Larson tied it for the Mustangs at 8:48 of the third period to force overtime where Lauren Klein scored 2:15 into overtime for the game-winner.

The Wolfpack (1-3-1, 0-1-1 SEC) outshot Mounds View (6-0, 2-0 SEC) 27-25 and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Alicia Wagenmen scored a power-play goal at 11:02 of the first period to tie the game. Wagenman assisted on Keys’ second-period goal and Mary Turitto assisted on two goals.

Caitlin Tate made 21 saves on 25 shots in the loss for Park.

“We played the whole game, played competitively and played hard and that’s step one,” head coach Steve Morse said. “We hadn’t done that in the past two games.”

Park grabbed a 3-2 lead just 1:19 into the third period Saturday against White Bear Lake, but couldn’t hang on for the victory.

The Bears (2-2-1, 0-1-1 SEC) rallied to tie the game with 2:12 left to play.

Ashley Wagenman, Turitto and Martineau each had a goal in the tie. Keys added an assist on Wagenman’s first period goal. Turitto added a short-handed goal in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 after White Bear Lake’s Peyton King scored a power-play goal 41 seconds into the period.

Wagenman’s goal at 4:10 of the first period gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. The Bears came back to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal from Lauren Basich at 12:00.

Carrie Tuttle scored the game-tying goal at 14:48 of the third period.

Tate made 31 saves in goal for Park.

“We had a lot of positives come out of that White Bear Lake game,” Morse said. “We took much better angles at their players coming up the ice and we were able to defend them better.”

The Wolfpack faces East Ridge Tuesday in Cottage Grove.
