Police: Burglars enter two Cottage Grove houses while homeowners inside sleeping

Cottage Grove police say burglars twice broke into homes recently while homeowners were inside sleeping and stole money and other items before fleeing.

Cottage Grove police say burglars twice broke into homes recently while homeowners were inside sleeping and stole money and other items before fleeing.

Police cited the two cases as they reminded residents to lock their garage doors and any service doors leading from a garage to a home.

In the most recent case, a burglar entered a home about 1:45 a.m. Monday in the 7800 block of 80th Street. The burglar stole an undisclosed amount of money from a wallet on the kitchen counter, according to police.

A homeowner was awakened by someone holding a flashlight at the bedroom door. The burglar ran out of the house when he realized someone was in the room, police said.

On Oct. 23, a homeowner in the 7900 block of Isleton Avenue reported that someone entered the home through an unlocked garage and stole a purse, cash, cellphone and an iPod device from the kitchen counter. There apparently was no contact with the homeowners.

Police did not release descriptions of the suspects or indicate whether the two cases were related.

Police urged residents to keep their doors locked and report any suspicious activity in the neighborhood as it is occurring. They also asked residents to consider installing motion lights to make it more difficult for a burglary to occur.

Anyone with information about the recent burglaries is asked to call the Cottage Grove Police Department tip line at 651-458-2801.
