Newport police reports for Sept. 20: Threats, fight, theft

Threats

A replacement worker during a recent labor lockout at SuperMom’s bakery in St. Paul Park reported that he felt threatened by the actions of two union drivers who were picketing on Aug. 29. The man told police he was followed to Newport Cold Storage on Maxwell Avenue and that one of the picketers followed him into the office and then acted suspicious around his vehicle. An employee of the storage business told the picketers to leave. No citations were issues and neither the alleged victim nor the picketers were identified in the report.

Theft

Xcel Energy, 3000 Maxwell Ave., reported Sept. 5 and again on Sept. 10 that someone stole spools of copper pipe and scrap copper pipe from the fenced-in property. No value of the stolen copper was listed.

A juvenile male told police Sept. 7 that someone siphoned gas from his vehicle while it was parked at Johnson Auto Body, 2064 Hastings Ave. Loss: $30.

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a gas drive-off on Sept. 11.

Fight

Police were called Sept. 9 to an apartment at 1420 10th Ave., on a report of a fight involving two men. An officer found a 26-year-old man holding down his 53-year-old roommate on a bed after they had been fighting. The elder man was angry about having to pay half of the cable bill, so he kicked down the younger man’s bedroom door and they started to fight, according to the report. They were cited for disorderly conduct.

Police were called shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 to the Cloverleaf Bar and Grill at 2146 Hastings Ave., for a reported fight behind the bar. Police could not locate the people who were said to have been fighting. Witnesses said everything was fine and that one person had already left, while bartenders said they didn’t know anything about a fight, according to the report.

Fire

Newport police and firefighters were called at about 4:45 p.m. Sept. 11 to a fire near Cedar Lane and 15th Street. Leaves were burning. Nobody was injured.
