After 34 years of service to Grey Cloud Island Township, Town Clerk Rich Mullen announced he's retiring at the end of the year.
“I'm going on 90 years old,” said Mullen, known for his frequent quips that make people laugh. “At my age, you don't buy green bananas.”
Mullen first served the township as town board chair in 1957 when the town hall was heated with a wood stove. The clerk's job is a good way to serve your neighbors, he told the Town Board at the September meeting.
The town board must appoint someone to serve the remainder of Mullen's term.
“I was hoping that you'd wait until the end of your term,” said Town Board Chair Dick Adams, who is running unopposed for another four-year term.
“That's two years. I'll be dead by then,” said Mullen who laughed along with others at his self-deprecating crack.
Town Board Member Paul Schoenecker is not running for a third term. Dean Hoydt, father of the Boy Scout who recently headed up painting the town hall for his Eagle Scout project, is running unopposed for Schoenecker's seat this fall.
