Newport police reports for Sept. 6: theft, burglary, domestic, trespassing

Recent criminal activity includes theft, trespassing, burglary, property damage and a domestic incident.

Property damage

Police were called Aug. 21 to the 900 block of First Street for damage to a vehicle. A passerby noticed that a window was broken on a parked vehicle and a large rock was found inside. The vehicle’s owner was not known.

Police were called to Pioneer Park on Aug. 20 for a complaint about juveniles who were swearing and knocking over park benches. Police did not locate the juveniles, but found a knocked over bench.

A homeowner in the 1900 block of 10th Avenue reported Aug. 19 that someone splattered paint on the wall of the residence.

A Newport resident reported Aug. 26 that someone sprayed paint on seven mailboxes in the 1600 block of Cedar Lane sometime during the previous night. Each mailbox was valued at $20.

Domestic

Police were called shortly before 2 a.m. Aug. 21 to a domestic incident at the parking lot of SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave. The officer reported seeing a van rocking back and forth and two people inside pushing and yelling at each other. They were separated. They had been drinking in St. Paul Park and stopped at the gas station for something to eat when they started to argue over issues they were having, according to the report. No citations were issued, but police told them to call for someone else to pick them up and drive them home.

A 21-year-old Newport man was arrested Aug. 19 on suspicion of fifth-degree domestic assault and interfering with a 911 call after a woman called police to report that her boyfriend hit her while they were in a room at Boyds Motel, 1700 Hastings Ave.

Burglary

Police were called to the 400 block of 13th Street Aug. 19 for a reported vehicle break-in. It was determined to be a burglary because someone stole items from vehicles parked inside a garage.

Trespassing

A 19-year-old Cottage Grove man and an 18-year-old Eagan woman were cited for trespassing in a cemetery after police found them in a vehicle parked in Red Rock Cemetery about 10 p.m. Aug. 16.

Theft

A Newport man reported Aug. 15 that someone stole his prescription sunglasses from his unlocked vehicle parked in the 1800 block of First Avenue.

A Newport resident reported Aug. 28 that someone stole a bike from a residence in the 1300 block of Eighth Avenue.

A Newport resident reported Aug. 27 that someone stole a GPS device from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 800 block of Ford Road.

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a gas drive-off on Aug. 25. The gas station reported another gas drive-off on Aug. 26.

Illegal fire

A 66-year-old Newport man was cited for illegal burning after police were called to his home Aug. 26 for a bonfire complaint.

Tampering

A Newport man reported Aug. 27 that someone rummaged through a vehicle parked in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue. Nothing was stolen.
