Even before it hit the pool, the East Ridge girls swimming and diving team was dealt a blow when it learned it would be without standout diver Jenna Karrow for the 2012 season. Karrow, the 2010 state diving champion and 2011 runner-up, will be forced to sit out her senior year with a back injury.
This fall, East Ridge will also be without 100-yard backstroke record holder Melanie Rabino and 200-yard individual medley record holder Rachel Treadway. Both graduated last spring.
However, East Ridge still brings back a number of talented swimmers in 2012.
Returning to the Raptors are: juniors Maddy Peters, Kelsey Pflieger, Meredith Ubel, Lindsey Lewis and Taylor Johnson; seniors MollyPatt Horan and Sara Press; and sophomore Kelly Burnham. Peters, Pflieger, Horan and Press were picked as team captains for 2012.
East Ridge finished 4-6 in its 10 meets in 2011 and took fifth place in Section 3AA.
Individually, in addition to Karrow, Treadway qualified for the state meet for the Raptors at the Section 3AA swim finals in the 100-yard butterfly. At sections, Peters just missed a state berth in the 100-yard freestyle, taking third place and also placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle.
East Ridge began the season with last week’s Suburban East Conference Relays.
Next, the team opens its dual season with a head-to-head matchup with White Bear Lake at home on Thursday, Aug. 30.
