Authorities removed the remains of a body found Sunday in the St. Croix River at Afton.

According to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office news release, authorities received a call at 11:56 a.m. to respond to mile marker No. 11 across from Windmill Marina in Afton for a possible body in the water.

Deputies from Washington and St. Croix counties responded and found the body in the water. The remains had been in the water “for a long period of time,” the release states, adding that it was in a serious state of decomposition.

After being removed from the water, the body was transferred to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officers on the scene were unable to determine the identity of the dead person.
