Filing under way for Cottage Grove, Newport elections

Filing is open for candidates for mayor and city council in Cottage Grove and Newport.

The municipal candidate filing period opened Tuesday, July 31 and runs through Tuesday, Aug. 14.

In Cottage Grove, Mayor Myron Bailey is up for re-election. Council seats held by Jen Peterson and Justin Olsen also will be on the Nov. 6 ballot. All three have announced plans to run for another four-year term.

Candidates can file at City Hall, 7516 80th St., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. City Hall will be open for filing until 5 p.m. on Aug. 14.

In Newport, Mayor Tim Geraghty announced last month he is running for another term, and council seats held by Bill Sumner and Tom Ingemann also are up for grabs this fall. Former planning commissioner and Dan Flood and current planning commissioner Katy McElwee-Stevens have said they intend to file to run for a council seat. All seats are four-year terms.

Candidates for the Newport positions can file from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday at City Hall, 596 Seventh Ave.

There is no primary election for municipal races.
