The Cottage Grove post office is getting a new address.
Post office customers will begin using the U.S. Postal Service’s annex facility in Cottage Grove’s industrial park on the west side of Highway 61 beginning Monday, July 30. The change comes as a result of the postal service’s sale of the main post office building at 7130 East Point Douglas Road. The building was purchased by Manufacturing Solutions of Minnesota.
As a result, all of the customer services and post office boxes are being moved to the annex facility at 7523 95th St. (The easiest way to get to the annex building is to take Jamaica Avenue to 95th Street.)
When the postal service moves or consolidates, it generally shuts down the old location on a Friday or Saturday and reopens in the new location the following Monday, postal service spokesman Pete Nowacki said. That is the plan in Cottage Grove, where the East Point Douglas Road location will close after normal business hours on Saturday, July 28.
The annex facility was remodeled to add a customer service area. Post office customer service hours will remain the same, and mail service will not change after the move.
Post office boxes will be set up much the same way they appear at the existing post office.
“Nobody’s number will change; nobody will have to take a different-size box,” Nowacki said, adding people might be able to pick up held packages a day earlier because they no longer will need to be moved between buildings. “Everything should be virtually the same.”
Except the location. Residents used to the East Point Douglas Road location will have to get familiar with driving across Highway 61 to the industrial park.
Nowacki said the postal service has received anecdotal public comments about that change, which will be less convenient for many Cottage Grove residents.
“Like any time you move a facility, it’s going to inconvenience some people,” Nowacki acknowledged. “They’re used to going to a particular spot … and it makes it more difficult for them.”
The Cottage Grove consolidation is part of the postal service’s nationwide efforts to bring down its expenses as it continues to lose money.
