Splish, splash: Cottage Grove's new water feature opens Tuesday
The city’s first splash pad – an interactive aquatic play area with nozzles that shoot water like a giant sprinkler – is set to open Tuesday, July 3 at Highlands Park on 70th Street near Hinton Avenue.
Just in time for the Fourth of July – and the sweltering summer temperatures forecast for next week – Cottage Grove’s newest aquatic amenity is ready to open to the public.
The city’s first splash pad – an interactive aquatic play area with nozzles that shoot water like a giant sprinkler – is set to open Tuesday, July 3 at Highlands Park on 70th Street near Hinton Avenue.
City Council members approved the water feature’s construction last year to help replace Cottage Grove’s aging municipal pool, built in the 1960s, that officials said had become too expensive to maintain amid declining attendance.
The Highlands Park splash pad will be free to use. It features interchangeable water play equipment on a cement base, with shady canopies and benches nearby for parents to relax. With no standing water, the city says the splash pad will be easy to maintain and won’t require a lifeguard.
A formal grand opening is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 13. City officials have said the Highlands Park splash pad could be the first of multiple throughout the city.
