Candidate Viewpoint: Janis Quinlan

Our state government has grown to an unsustainable level; reason dictates that we act now to cut it back.

By: Janis Quinlan, South Washington County Bulletin

My name is Janis Quinlan and I am running for Minnesota Senate District 54. As the youngest of nine children growing up on the east side of St. Paul, I had the privilege of learning important family values at a very young age. While my father supported our family by teaching high school, my mother worked tirelessly raising us with strong family morals in a traditional Catholic household. To this day, I remain committed to those values.

Politics is often personal. As the mother of two sons, one in college and one who has just enlisted in the Army National Guard, I want to work as hard as I can to give them a brighter future than the generation before them.

Having grown up in a family that prized self-reliance, I am keenly aware of unwarranted government intrusion throughout our everyday lives. Our state government has grown to an unsustainable level; reason dictates that we act now to cut it back. I believe I can be that voice of reason for the people in our district.

As a small business owner who has made her career in real estate, I can relate to the struggles within our business community. Small businesses provide the lion’s share of new jobs, but Minnesota currently makes it risky for entrepreneurs to start new ventures by crushing them with taxes and red tape. I recently heard of one lady who was interested in starting an elderly care facility, but who abandoned the idea after receiving 20 pages of regulations. Now the elderly people who could have benefited from such a facility will have to go without. This is bad enough in a good economy; it is madness in the middle of the worst economic downturn most of us have ever experienced. We must provide an economic regulatory environment that helps small businesses succeed if we are to jumpstart our economy and slash unemployment.

I am not afraid to stand up for the people I represent. Once elected, I will represent the best interests of the citizens of Senate District 54, not mechanically vote whatever the party line happens to be. I look forward to hearing from you, my future constituents, on the topics you consider important, and I encourage you to contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
