Park girls lacrosse: Wolfpack’s upset falls short, season comes to an end

The Park girls lacrosse team put up more than a fight against one of the state’s top teams, but in the end, its upset fell short.

Lakeville North, the No. 1 seed and third-ranked team in the state, ended Park’ season with a 11-10 loss in the Section 3 quarterfinals last Tuesday.

The game went back and forth early with Park tying the game 3-3 midway through the first half. Lakeville North (13-3) then went on a run, however, and made the halftime score 7-4. In the second half, the Panthers went ahead 11-6 with 4:05 remaining. But, that’s when Park got rolling.

Park senior Allie Thalhuber won the next draw and raced to net to make it 11-7 with 3:55 left. Then, Bailey Aasen cut it to 11-8 with 2:48 to go. Thalhuber then forced her way around three defenders with 2:20 remaining to cut it to 11-9 and Katie Bresnahan made it 11-10 with 1:08 on the clock by making a run from behind the net. Unfortunately, Lakeville won the next draw and Park wasn’t able to get the ball back until there was only 10 seconds remaining.

Thalhuber led the way in the game with four goals. Fellow senior Karisa Land scored two goals. Aasen, a freshman, had two goals and one assist, sophomore Maddie Nelson had a goal and an assist and senior Katie Bresnahan scored one goal.

The Wolfpack had its best offensive season in history in 2012. Overall, Park scored 193 goals this year next closest season total is 153 goals. Thalhuber’s 63 goals this year were a single-season Park record. Land was second in goals scored this year with 40 – the fourth most in school history in a single year. Aasen and Nelson each had 22 goals this season. However, Park now must say good-bye to the top three goal scorers in school history – Thalhuber, Land and Weidner. Thalhuber scored a Park-record 164 career goals. Land has 68 goals and Weidner has 48 goals.

In all, Park graduates 10 seniors from this year’s roster – Thalhuber, Land, Bresnahan, Kaitlyn Cornwell, Allie Morse, Olivia Magee, Rochelle Braun, AnnMarie Lane, Alisha Malave and Erica Weidner.
