A Cottage Grove man was behind the wheel of an empty school bus that was involved in a fatal four-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 94 in St. Paul, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
The chain-reaction crash occurred just before 9:30 a.m. when the school bus, driven by 51-year-old Tony Thao, hit a slower-moving van from behind near the Cretin Avenue exit on westbound I-94. The van then rear-ended another vehicle, which then proceeded to hit a fourth vehicle, according to a State Patrol incident report.
A 75-year-old Roseville woman riding in the van was killed in the crash and others were injured, the State Patrol said.
There were no students on the school bus. Thao was headed back to a bus depot following the completion of a route for the St. Paul school district, according to news reports. Thao was no seriously injured.
