Candidates begin to file in south Washington County-area legislative races

The state candidate filing period started Tuesday, May 22, and one local legislative hopeful signed his campaign papers on opening day.
Derrick Lehrke, a Cottage Grove City Council member who is running for House District 54A, filed for election on Tuesday, his birthday. Lehrke is the Republican-endorsed candidate running for the seat that opened up after Rep. John Kriesel, R-Cottage Grove, decided against re-election.
His DFL opponent, Dan Schoen, a St. Paul Park resident and Cottage Grove police officer, followed suit soon after, filing Wednesday to run for office in House District 54A
All Minnesota legislative seats are on the ballot this year due to redistricting.
In the local Senate District 54, Sen. Katie Sieben, DFL-Cottage Grove, is running for re-election to her third term in the Senate. Sieben filed Wednesday.
She is expected to be challenged by Republican Janis Quinlan of St. Paul Park. In House District 54B, Republican Rep. Denny McNamara is planning to seek re-election; his DFL-endorsed opponent is expected to be Joanna Bayers of Hastings.
None of the statewide constitutional offices – governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state or attorney general – is on the ballot this year, but Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is seeking re-election. Kurt Bills is the Republican-endorsed Senate candidate.
U.S. Reps. John Kline, a Republican, and Betty McCollum, a Democrat, whose districts include portions of south Washington County, are seeking re-election. Kline is in the 2nd District. McCollum represents the 4th District.
The filing period ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.
Candidates running for local municipal races will file later this summer. The Cottage Grove mayor’s seat and two council seats are on the ballot; the filing period for those races is July 31-Aug. 14. In Newport, the mayor’s seat and two council seats will be up for grabs.
